United States, 11 Pacific Rim countries reach trade deal

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States and 11 other Pacific Rim countries reached a contentious trade pact that cuts trade barriers, sets labor and environmental standards and protects the intellectual property of multinational corporations. Now each country must sell the deal to skeptical lawmakers.

The pact, known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, aims to encourage trade between the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Together, the countries account for 40 percent of world economic output. Trade unions and other critics say the deal will expose workers to more foreign competition and cost jobs.

Trans-Pacific Partnership Is Reached, but Faces Scrutiny in Congress

“When more than 95 percent of our potential customers live outside our borders, we can’t let countries like China write the rules of the global economy,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “We should write those rules, opening new markets to American products while setting high standards for protecting workers and preserving our environment.”

That argument — that the Pacific pact would be a bulwark against China’s power and a standard-setter for global commerce — will be central to the president’s hard sell ahead to Congress, administration officials said.

The Ford Motor Company quickly condemned the agreement, saying in a statement that it would not meaningfully address currency manipulation by American trading partners, like Japan, that has the effect of lowering prices for their exports to the United States.

“To ensure the future competitiveness of American manufacturing, we recommend Congress not approve T.P.P. in its current form,” the Detroit automaker said.

Even the Donald is getting in on it.

The incompetence of our current administration is beyond comprehension. TPP is a terrible deal.

The question is whether China will join in or not? Let the economic hit man games begin. Certainly a move by Washington to level the playing field a bit but will it be good long term or are the Japanese getting the better deal out of this?
