The Most Ridiculous Prepper Stereotypes and Why They Are Wrong

Until recently, many people had never heard the term “prepper,” and probably had no idea what it meant to be one. Today, however, the prepper numbers are growing by leaps and bounds. There are whole websites and online communities devoted to prepping, emergency survival, and other issues relating to disaster preparedness. Along with that comes a stereotype of what a prepper actually is and many of the common views are misconceptions. Some television shows depict preppers as crazy outcasts of society with radical worldviews. The media sometimes portrays the prepping community as extreme right-wing political activists or ignorant farming types. The truth is that you really can’t tell a prepper by image or political view points. We represent a wide variety of belief systems, political views, and approaches to emergency preparedness. With that in mind, let’s look at 5 of the most ridiculous prepper stereotypes seen today and why they are completely wrong.

Most people are prudent. Keeping simple supplies around the house is a logical thing. Only the media has put forth the perception of madness from a few extreme cases. Real dodo birds out there make it hard for the rest of us. A few smart ones, too! After all, gotta make a buck on the lame and ignorant.

We have lots of fruit trees where we live. So every year we preserve the peaches and apricots and make raisens out of the grapes. This gives us plenty in storage to last for some time in a rotating basis. If you dry them they make good ingredients for those fruit cakes everybody loves so much come Christmas time.

Besides, all the neighbors loved my grandmothers old apricot preserves. In the old days, more people would use these skills and trade their recipes and goods. I still know how to make the preserves. The trees in the yard are getting old now and they don't bear much fruit anymore. That's ok, because we picked out a couple new ones to replace them. In a few years, the cycle of harvest will start for another generation.
