YES!`Mountain tribes in California dug their houses into the ground.
This is why they were called 'Diggers', which, 165 years ago, was a worse word than
the 'N' word in California.
The first Governor in California, in 1848, before California became a state, stated,
"We must rid ourselves of that wretched race"
And he didn't mean Blacks.

I figure the gold diggers were the filthy pigs of the day. Including the upper echelon type! Big FAT digger pigs destroying the land for their gluttonous profit.

Don't forget about all those underground facilities dug by the diggers of today. The slave diggers and their financiers digging their underground shelters to save themselves from oblivion on the surface of the planet.

Modern day diggers....

The towns of Marysville and Honey Lake paid bounties for Indian scalps. Shasta City offered five dollars for every Indian head brought to city hall. And California's state treasury reimbursed many of the local governments for their expenses. There were some 150,000 Indians in California before the Forty-niners came. By 1870, there would be fewer than 30,000. It was the worst slaughter of Indian peoples in United States history.

Would this guy be considered a digger? The only diggers I know are the ones who dig the holes to put the trash in.
