Can Bill Gates' donation of 100,000 chickens help Africa's poorest?

Families that keep chickens can use them either for their own meat or sell them. Gates also wrote that eating more eggs, rich in protein and other nutrients, can help fight malnutrition, and many farmers with small flocks find that it's more economical to let the eggs hatch, sell the chicks, and use the money to buy nutritious food.

On her blog, Melinda Gates added that chickens are a good source of income, known in international development circles as "the ATM of the poor," because they are easy to sell on short notice to cover day-to-day expenses.

It's great to see resource development from around the world.

African nations, as seen on major media outlets, seem to be developing on a more self sufficient strategy. Chickens aren't the only example. Free power sources and water innovations are beginning to come to the fore. This just proves that people can help themselves to become self sufficient.

This must bring a mention towards all the code enforcement in the United States. These regulations prevent it's own people from raising their own chickens and growing their own gardens. Nevermind the self suffiency for electrical power. That's a major issue for another day!

Might as well give it go if you can. Better check up on your city regulations. The foxy law dawgs are always looking to kill chickens.

Urban gardeners are flocking to chickens to keep bugs away and provide eggs and compost. Keeping backyard birds is easier than you might think.

Quit kissing chickens, feds advise after salmonella outbreaks

Does this mean all those chickens that Bill Gates gave away will cause more disease for the recipients?

Conflicting information. In Africa, chickens for self sufficiency are wholesome. In America, scare tactics to keep us away from sufficient means of controlling our own lives. Big gubmint to the rescue....
