In Texas it's probable cause for search and seizure.

Although the Catholic church officially opposes them, the folk saints of Latin America are enormously important to the lives of hundreds of thousands of their followers. Criminals, from cartels to thieves and more, have also adopted the practice of praying to entities like Santa Muerte for forgiveness, protection and aid. But why?

Drug cartels pray to saints for protection from police, expert says

But why would any saint intercede on behalf of a criminal? Almonte says some in cartels don't believe what they're doing is wrong and even though in many cases they're praying to avoid police, this bizarre practice can also be a giveaway.

"They'll have a lot of these [prayer cards or idols] on them, or in their vehicle or in their home. These items are meant to be a red flag," he said. "I make it clear, though, none of these things by themselves or combined are probable cause for search and arrest. Just something to look at, keep an eye out for."

A Religion that Uses Human Sacrifice is Gaining Popularity with Mexican Drug Cartels

Texas law enforcement officials told the media this deviant religion is now being openly practiced by violent lawbreakers and drug traffickers. An ex-narcotics detective, Robert Almonte, told a media house that an increasing number of criminals now pray to Santa Muerte. La Santa Muerte is not a new phenomenon. It has been around since the latter part of the 1980s.

Depicted as a mysterious and dark saint wearing a black robe commonly worn by nuns, it is well known among Mexican-American Catholics. It is distinctive as it carries a scythe. Human sacrifice is thought to be a part of this unorthodox spiritual outgrowth.

According to people who pray to Santa Muerte, the benefits are repelling any kind of wrongdoing. It is said to provide supernatural help, including the protection of drug smugglers against law enforcement. Its devotees use Catholic prayers and shrines are built in its honor

Mictecaciahuatl is today's Santa Muerte,
The Holy Death

Her role in the underworld was to watch over the bones of the dead. Mictlantecuhtli was a primary god to the Aztecs, ever-present in all rituals involvingdescent into the underworld. Clay statues have been found, at the opening of the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan. His consort, Lady Death was associated with Spiders, Owls, and Bats and together theyresided in a temple of darkness, a place without windows or doors. There they stood, mirror opposites of their gods of life, Ometecuhtli and Omecihuatl

In Mexico, Santa Muerte has been linked to Satanism by the Catholic Churchin an attempt to thwart followers. Catholics and Protestants have joined forcesin warning people of the 'Black Magic' and trickery of the devil. The Churchis often horrified by the skeletons, reapersand evolution of Our Lady of Guadelupe.Folk practice does involve mysticism andmagic, but so do most world religions butthe language is systematically 'holy'. Whatthe church calls Miracles, folk practice callsMagic. All religion is mystical and allreligion has some form of magic andtrickery. Whether those elements are goodor evil, light or dark; depends on personal interpretation and practicalapplication. The organization of information regarding Santa Muerte, her rituals, prayers, and dedications is chaotic. There is no centralized location a person may obtain information. There are a multitude of websites, ebooks, print material and referrals to mailing addresses but nearly all of them finger point to the'scammers' while scamming themselves. Like any new 'religion' it preys on the weak and their pocket books. None-the-less, I've managed to collect some worthy articles, books, prayers, a collective of symbolism, and practical application. It takes time and dedication, as you have to weed out the nonsense, and having a translating program is down-right handy. I put together this essay for any person who wishesto learn about Santa Muerte, regardless if they choose to devote to her. Devotion is not required to achievewisdom, and wisdom is achieved through self-education, examination and application.
